About Gedling Youth and Community Hub:

Gedling Youth and Community Hub (GYCH) is a long-established charity, founded in 1967, dedicated to delivering youth and community activities. Our base – the historic Victorian Gedling Railway Station – has served generations as a vibrant focal point for learning, recreation, and connection.

Now with thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are undertaking a once-in-a-generation restoration of the station and surrounding garden. This project will protect its unique architectural heritage and create inclusive, multi-use spaces for the community.

Role Overview:

GYCH are delivering the ‘Transforming Gedling Station’ project between July 2025 – October 2026. Thanks to the Players of the National Lottery the project has been awarded a £173,286 grant from The National Heritage Lottery Fund that will undertake urgent restoration work on the Station, explore and develop heritage interpretation, teach traditional building skills, and engage new audiences with the site.

We are looking for a Project Manager to be responsible for overseeing the initiation, delivery, completion and evaluation of delivery of the ‘Transforming Gedling Station’ project.

This role will principally support the project and lay the foundations for a larger capital project, therefore the appointee will need to be a pro-active, self-starter to provide hands-on project management.  This will include a focus on a capital building works schedule which will restore the unique heritage of the Victorian era building, making it safe, accessible, usable and welcoming for the local community.

In collaboration with the project Steering Group with oversight from the charity Trustees, the Project Manager will primarily manage relationships with building works contractors to ensure works are delivered on time, within designated budgets and to agreed quality standards. This role will also work in partnership with the external Evaluation Consultant to support data collection where necessary. The Project Manager will report to the Steering Group and Board of Trustees.

As our Heritage Project Manager, you’ll be the driving force in turning a heritage vision into a practical reality. Your work will directly:

  • Safeguard one of Nottinghamshire’s best-preserved Great Northern Railway suburban branch line stations
  • Enable young people and community groups to shape and enjoy the restored space
  • Connect heritage conservation with future community needs

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead day-to-day on the ground delivery of the restoration project, ensuring milestones and budgets are monitored and met
  • Liaise with all key stakeholders including building contractors, architects, consultants, funders and volunteers
  • Oversee procurement and purchasing in line with Heritage Fund and GYCH policies
  • Monitor budgets, cash flow, and reporting requirements
  • Communicate effectively with trustees on key decisions and governance
  • Support community engagement activities, interpretation, and communications
  • Report directly to the Steering Group, GYCH trustees and Heritage Fund as required
  • Support co-ordination management responsibilities for regular and ad-hoc volunteers

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Proven track record in managing heritage or capital works projects
  • Excellent budget and contractor management skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
  • Confident communicator who can liaise effectively with community, contractors, and funders
  • An understanding of National Lottery Heritage Fund priorities and reporting

Desirable:

  • Experience working with small volunteer-led charities
  • Understanding and appreciation of heritage and community focussed organisations
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and GDPR in a community context

This is a freelance contract for services; the appointed Project Manager is responsible for:

  • Paying tax, NI and pension contributions (self-employed freelancers are not entitled to holiday or sick pay under agreed terms)
  • Determining their working pattern to meet agreed deliverables
  • Provide work equipment (e.g. laptop) and arranging the appropriate professional and public liability insurance
  • Invoicing for payment as agreed

You may be required to work ad hoc evenings and/or weekends on occasion to attend meetings and or events. Gedling Youth and Community Hub is generally open on Thursdays and Sundays for volunteer projects alongside ad-hoc community events. Therefore, flexible working patterns can be accommodated; please outline any preferences in your application.

Please note that GYCH is currently supported and delivered by dedicated Trustees and a small volunteer team; therefore, the successful Project Manager should be prepared to work as part of this pivotal team to deliver the charity’s operations and objectives where not doing so would impact on the ability of the heritage project to continue.
